Ocean Coast 3D Helicopter Shoot

Ocean Coast 3D Helicopter Shoot

This past week I spent 4 days out on the East Coast of Canada working with Arcadia Films shooting a one-hour 3D spot. The film incorporated about 35 minutes of 3D aerial footage above Nova Scotia that we shot from an AStar Helicopter. I had the joy to work with a practiced Aerial Cinematographer and Camera Operator, Mike Darby, who is a veteran when it comes to shooting from the sky. We attached his Stab-C to the front of the AStar. This stabilized, gyroscopic head allows for beautifully smooth and balanced camera moves even while traveling at speeds in excess of 100mph.

Queen Elizabeth 3D

Back during the summer I had the honour to work on a live 3D presentation to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth. The Queen made a royal visit to Canada this summer where she spent half a day at Pinewood Studios in Toronto. In honour of her visit, a live dance inspired by the Jai Ho dance sequence from Slumdog Millionaire. Genie Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated Indian-born Canadian film director and screenwriter Deepa Mehta directed the dance with a War of 1812 twist.

The stereoscopic shoot was coordinated by Alan Lennox, a 3D Broadcast Specialist and Veteran Steadi-Cam Operator. The gear was provided and rented from 3D Camera Company of Toronto, Canada. We shot everything with the Silicon Imaging Si-2k Mini’s 3D system, with the new DDR Recorder by 1-Beyond.

This past week I had the pleasure working on the Pilot shoot for The Red Show (3D), a quality children’s television show that possesses a strong foundation in morals and positive learning experiences. It was shot at Pyman Studios where John Reeve was the lead Stereographer and I took the role Second Unit Stereography. Alan Lennox, 3D Broadcast Specialist, took the role of Director of Photography as he possess a strong background in cinematography.

The Flip & Flop of Negative and Positive Parallax

The Flip & Flop of Negative and Positive Parallax...

In their simplest forms, Negative Parallax refers to any 3D Stereoscopic image that appears in front of the screen plane, or pulling off the screen towards the audience.

3D to 2D glasses (reverse conversion)

3D to 2D glasses (reverse conversion)

Recently, I was going to see a 3D film with a couple of acquaintances, one of whom has complained in the past of being sensitive to 3D movies in the theatre, claiming that they cause him eye-strain. The film in which we were going to see (which will remain nameless) had a reputation amongst my peers of having some bad 3D scenes, which was most likely divergence issues, which is the number one cause for poor 3D in movie theatres.
